Video of the blown call by Umpire Jerry Meals in the Atlanta Braves vs Pirates 19 inning game

Below is the video of the blown call at home plate by umpire Jerry Meals at the end of the Atlanta Braves vs Pittsburgh Pirates game tonight. The Braves' runner, Julio Lugo, was clearly out as seen in the video.

I guess Jerry Meals wanted to go back to his hotel room and either sleep or eat a meal since it was already 2am in Atlanta. Bud Selig should investigate this matter and suspend Meals.

There should be more calls for instant replay now too. Two videos of the wrong call below.

Thanks for posting this so soon.

This was the worst call I've EVER seen. The Atlanta player thought he was out, because he was. He couldn't believe his dumb luck.

Like you said, the ump just wanted to go home.

UNBELIEVABLE! I would quit immediately if I were Meals. I have never seen a more obvious case of incompetence. What is going on with MLB umpires. Meals should either be fired or quit if we are ever to believe in any of them. Just horrible. Not within 3 yards of home plate????

To play 19 innings of excellent baseball (by both teams) and have the outcome decided by an obviously blind umpire is a disgrace to the game. That umpire should be held accountable, and anything short of a suspension will be a mistake by the league. If this is what we can expect from the MLB umpires, then it's definetly time for replays. Why spend the time watching a game when the umpire decides who will win.

i don't know..watched it 10 times..but does the catcher while swiping his glove not miss the runner..

Re:Anonymous- You must have been as tired & hungry as the ump to say he missed the runner...it's disgusting & disappointing. What's even more disgusting is for Lugo to say he didn't feel the tag! Of course you are going to say that you loser!!! Video replay is so in order since these ump's can't make a correct decision that would be clear enough for a two yr. old to decide...To be human is to error, video tells all & doesn't make the most ridiculous bad call of a 19 inning game. Meals sould be inducted into the "Hall of Shame"

Hey Anonymous, just come out and admit you're the ump, Jerry Meals. I watched it live and saw he was out. Then watched the replays from 5 or 6 camera angles, and he was still out. The catcher swiped him on the thigh and was ready to throw down to 1st for the double play, when he heard the safe call. So, Jerry, watch it a few more times from different camera angles and you'll see he's "out". Even the runner (Lugo) initially knew he was out based on his first reaction at the plate. If you still can't see that he's out, then get a second opinion from your seeing eye dog.

Even the other umpire coming in knew he was out. I think he was just listening so he could report back to the league on this stupid call!

I wouldn't be so quick to say it was a blown call, either, as the catcher does appear to miss the tag. My only hesitation is the runner's reaction, but I think he assumed he was out due to the fact that he had so much contact with the catcher (so he figured he had to be out). But even though they had body contact, the catcher appears to have missed the tag. It's not so clear-cut.

Wow Anonymous, go ahead and take a stand that it was not a blown call. The umpire that made the call as well as the league, admitted that "unfortunately, it appears the call was missed". Translation for you "Anonymous" - "IT WAS A BLOWN CALL". I watch a lot of baseball and would like the players to decide the outcome of the game, not the umpires. If that means implementing replays to get the correct call, then I'm willing to sit thru an additional 5 minutes of replay after I've already committed 2 1/2 to 3 hours to watch the game. Go pet that seeing eye dog of yours.

You people are all such Lemmings.
Do you understand that the glove with the ball in it must physically touch (tag) the player? Yes the throw beat the runner. Yes the catcher had possession. Yes he swiped at the runner. But NO the video does NOT ever show the glove touch the runner. He is close, but close is NOT touching.

Let me repeat emphatically and absolutely, the video does not show the glove touching the runner!
Close does not count!

You're correct about one thing:
Close does not count.
But, even the umpire that blew the call said after reviewing the replay - Lugo's pants moved when tagged. Then Meals said -
''That's telling me that I was incorrect in my decision and that he should have been ruled out and not safe.'' Try having someone read the news to you, you'll learn that those are his exact words. What do you expect the catcher to do? He did what he is supposed to do, swipe tag and look for the double play out at first. You're not a baseball fan, you're just a loser that likes to argue. Move on...Go take your dog for a walk.

Steve you need to settle down its a damn game and your just an ignorant fan that cares way to much about a team your not even on. In the videos provided no it does not actually look like the glove made contact with the runners. There are better videos out there but maybe the guy didnt see them and based his assumption off of that. Settle down my god.
